Management Team
Phillip Whalen - President and CEO
Phillip Whalen has been in high-tech for more than 30 years and has held executive management positions in the software industry since 1985. He was most recently a full-time executive consultant serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Wit SoundView, a New York investment bank. Previously, Mr. Whalen was with E*OFFERING, E*TRADE's online investment banking venture, where he was Executive Vice President of the company's marketing, Internet, and services initiatives. During his tenure, Mr. Whalen helped spur a turnaround and subsequent acquisition by Wit SoundView. Prior to E*OFFERING, Mr. Whalen was Vice President of Sales and Corporate Marketing at ShareData, the leading provider of equity compensation software. His efforts at ShareData significantly contributed to the company's acquisition by E*TRADE, where he subsequently continued in the same capacity.
Mr. Whalen's accomplishments include serving as the original Vice President of Sales and Marketing at cc:Mail, Inc., at a time when it was ranked as one of the top 10 fastest growing software companies. cc:Mail was acquired by Lotus Development Corporation, and at its height had more than 20 million users. Following cc:Mail, Mr. Whalen served in a series of executive management roles where he enabled software companies to achieve rapid growth and major product recognition, including serving as President and CEO of Thinking Tools, a public multi-media business simulation software company.
Mr. Whalen earned a BA in Chemistry from Denison University, an MA from Webster University, and an MBA from Stanford University.
Bob Vieraitis - Vice President, Marketing
Bob Vieraitis has more than 20 years of experience bringing new products and technologies to market. Before joining OnStation, Mr. Vieraitis was Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at AirPrism where he launched the company and its product line. While at AirPrism, he drove major OEM deals that established the company in the marketplace and set it up for acquisition by an industry leader.
Prior to AirPrism, Mr. Vieraitis was Vice President of Product Marketing at Portal Software where he led product strategy, product management and product marketing efforts that delivered an industry-leading product line. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Marketing and Sales at GolfWeb, a pioneering Internet content startup that became the dominant golf site on the Web and was ultimately acquired by CBS/SportsLine.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Vieraitis was at Sun Microsystems for 9 years where he held several strategic positions including Director of Software Product Marketing. He began his marketing career as a Senior Product Manager at Data General upon completing his service as a Project Engineer in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Vieraitis holds a BS degree in Computer Science from M.I.T. and an MBA from Babson College.
Terry Cates - Vice President, Engineering
Terry Cates has over 17 years of software development and engineering management experience. Most recently, Mr. Cates was the vice president of engineering for Wavelink’s mobile manager wireless infrastructure management product line. Prior to Wavelink, Mr. Cates spent four years in engineering management positions at Marimba (acquired by BMC) with responsibility for half of the development organization. Mr. Cates was responsible for the creation of Marimba’s data center management product line.
Prior to Marimba, Mr. Cates designed logic and simulation models at Aptos Semiconductor (acquired by ISSI), and business applications software at Cypress Semiconductor, both in San Jose, CA. Mr. Cates started his career in automotive dealership automation software for start-up Dega Systems in San Luis Obispo, CA in 1987. Mr. Cates received his BS in Computer Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
Darrell Steele - Senior Director, National Accounts
Darrell Steele has been helping automotive dealerships communicate with prospects and customers for over 18 years. Prior to joining OnStation, Mr. Steele spent over 9 years with Newgen Results Corporation in San Diego, CA, having held a number of field sales, corporate and sales management positions including: Western Regional Director, Director of National Accounts and Director of Sales Operations. As Director of National Accounts, Mr. Steele helped Newgen, a CRM provider to the Automotive Industry, acquire relationships with a number of automotive OEMs including: General Motors, Toyota, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Saab, Nissan and BMW. In addition, Mr. Steele served as Director of Sales Operations where he managed a 50+ group of customer/sales support agents, lead the development of several sales automation tools, and deployed other back-end solutions that supported a field force of over 140 throughout North America.
Prior to joining Newgen, Mr. Steele spent 5 years with Picture Perfect Promotions, an Irvine, CA company that pioneered direct mail marketing for automotive dealership service departments. Beginning as an Account Manager, Mr. Steele was consistently one of the top salespeople, while in addition, was able to help Picture Perfect Promotions establish relationships with several OEMs including: General Motors and Mazda.
Before joining Picture Perfect Promotions, Mr. Steele sold newspaper advertising to automotive dealerships throughout Southern California. Mr. Steele holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the University of Utah.
